SUBJECT: Nominations for Regents' Professorships Deadline
DATE: May 19, 2009
It is with pleasure that I launch the call for nominations of candidates for 2009 Regents' Professors. The designation of Regents' Professor is the highest of faculty ranks and is reserved for full professors with exceptional achievements that have brought them national or international recognition. Regents' Professors are expected to exemplify the highest objectives and standards of the University through their scholarship, research or creative activities, and teaching. These appointments, approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, are limited to three percent of the tenured and tenure-track faculty and carry a modest salary increment.
Nominations may come from any self-constituted group of three to five tenured faculty members. Nomination packets must include the name and contact information (phone, email address) of the chair of the nominating group. The nominating group should employ the format indicated on the accompanying sheets.
One hard copy of the candidate's nomination packet, complete with the names, titles, unit affiliations, and signatures of the nominating committee members, should be submitted to the Office of the President, and addressed to the Chair, Advisory Committee on Regents' Professorships. The deadline for submissions of the candidate's nomination packet is no later than the end of the business day, Monday, November 16, 2009.
Once nominated, individuals may remain in the candidate pool for three years. You are urged to update the dossier to benefit the nominee for the second and third years. After three years, renomination is possible, but at least one year must elapse before the renomination can be considered.
As you contemplate worthy candidates, I ask you to give particular consideration to qualified women and minority candidates and to consider the full range of academic disciplines.
Nomination packages must include the following materials:
- A nominating statement of not more than two pages written in the recognition that not all readers will be experts in the nominee's field. Signatures, full names, titles and unit affiliations of the nominators should be appended.
- The statement should address the nominee's principal scholarly and professional achievements, including their intellectual significance and impact on the University's mission. It should describe the nominee's contributions to the University's teaching and advising program at all levels from undergraduate to advanced research, including classroom teaching and/or teaching and advising on an individual basis. Finally the statement should describe any contributions to scholarly professional service.
- Extraneous information is likely to obscure rather than enhance the case, so it is critical to emphasize the nominee's strongest attributes. The Advisory Committee may seek additional information before making its final selections.
- At least six but no more than 12 supporting letters, each of two pages or less, which may come from inside or outside the University and should address the nominee's achievements. No more than two letters should come from former students. These referees should be chosen with particular care because their letters will be seen as primary evidence that will weight heavily in the evaluation process.
- A one-paragraph bio-sketch of each nominator and referee.
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae, with a publication list, reflecting all accomplishments and activities germane to the nomination. The length and number of entries are secondary to an emphasis on truly significant matters as reflected, for example, in frequently cited publications, awards and prizes, important exhibits, invited lectures or service on major national or international bodies. A list of regularly taught courses (with enrollments), with information on teaching evaluations and any teaching awards, and graduate student committee responsibilities should be included.
Submit one original package, complete with the signatures of the nominating committee, to the Office of the President, Administration 712, Box 210066, and addressed to the Chair, Advisory Committee on Regents' Professorships.
SUGGESTED TOPICAL FORMAT FOR NOMINATIONS:
1. Candidate's name.
2. Position and affiliation (with address and telephone number).
3. Date of joining the University.
4. Two-page nominating statement:
a. Outstanding accomplishments in research, scholarship or creative endeavor, and their impact on the discipline or field.
b. Contributions and accomplishments in teaching at all levels and in all modes.
c. Outstanding contributions to scholarly professional service.
d. Other contributions, showing why they are important for the nominee's discipline or field.
