University of Arizona Honorary Degrees

Purpose

Honorary degrees recognize distinguished contributions to the university, the state, the nation, or the world and are awarded at commencement.  

To be eligible for an honorary degree, a candidate must meet at least one of these criteria: 

  1. Outstanding achievement or service for the benefit of the University of Arizona.
  2. Outstanding achievement or service for the benefit of the City of Tucson or State of Arizona.
  3. Outstanding achievement or service for the benefit of the nation or world. 

Additional considerations include: 

  1. Sustained and dedicated commitment to public life and service.
  2. Significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge.
  3. Significant contributions to the University of Arizona's ability to achieve its mission. 

Honorary degrees may not be awarded to university employees, students, or incumbent elected officials. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the University President.
